My Story

Welcome to our page! My Name is John Harrison, I am the owner and operator of Harrisons Bodywork and Movement Lab (The Movement Lab). I'm a happily married man and father of 4 children who started my journey into wellness nearly 20 yrs ago. I got my start in conventional healthcare the year of 2006 working with St Luke's Hospital and Health Network (Lehigh Valley Pennsylvania). I worked my way up from an entry level position as a medical equipment delivery guy to a Respiratory Therapy Technician within 2 years. During that time my health was not great and had, myself, reached an all time high at near 300lbs and 32% bodyfat. After about 3 months in the Respiratory department primarily working with obese, pre and post op sleep apnea patients, it became evident to me where I was heading. The last thing I wanted was to depend on a machine(CPAP) to keep my airway open so as to not collapse from my fatty neck. So I started to take my fitness and nutrition seriously. I started out my Journey like most, jogging/running/elliptical machines for cardio and strength training/bodybuilding for reshaping the body, and had pretty good success for about the first year and lost 50lbs and dropped to about 26%Body Fat. But as with many on this journey, my body hit a plateau with the methods I was implementing and the progress came to a halt. Frustrated and tired, I actually cancelled my gym membership and started researching unconventional and home gym training methods, and was introduced to the Kettlebell. Being a relatively "strong" guy I went out and bought an ego sized kettlebell and within a few weeks tweaked my back and had to stop training/exercise. However there was something fascinatingly intimidating about this cannonball with the handle that held my interest so much so that once healed I found a trainer (Andre Patenko) in the Philadelphia area who specialized in kettlebell training and hired him to coach me. After two months of training with Andre twice a week and lots of practice on my own I broke my plateau and was down another 25lbs! As you could imagine at this point to have gone from 300lbs to 225lbs people really started to notice and ask a lot of questions, and knew I was onto something special with the mighty Kettlebell! In 2009 I decided to pursue an education in Strength and conditioning with NASM, Functional movement training with FMS, and Kettlebell training with Strong First (The Nations Gold Standard) in Kettlebell Training, at the time all for my interests (to make sure training as smart and efficiently) and perhaps to be (at the very least better answer questions) or even help others in my spare time. Professionally during this time things started to change for me as well as I started to transition out of Respiratory Therapy and began training in post op surgical bracing& orthotics, which I loved as this department was more in line with what I was pursuing in my personal life. As I started to study movement and gait analysis to better understand the mechanics and purpose/effects of properly fitted braces and orthotic devices, the better I understood body mechanics, which I believe led me to being a better part time coach. Yes, the two fields seemed to be working with great synergy, and I felt like a sponge soaking it all in! Once I completed my Level 1 Functional Movement Certification (FMS) which is a movement assessment designed with the intention revealing ones movement restrictions imbalances and or weaknesses. I decided to attend Pennsylvania Institute Of Massage Therapy ( the only medical massage school in the state) and happened to be right across the street from the Orthopedic building I was working in in Northern Bucks county Pennsylvania. I graduated that program in the fall of 2010. While still working full time in the healthcare industry, I started working part time for a Wellness center, which gave me great exposure to multiple holistic healing modalities such as Chiropractic care, acupuncture, muscle balancing and holistic nutrition. Fast forward 6 yrs to the spring of 2016 I had enough of the 70 hr health care work weeks, and a burning desire to help people from the holistic side of healthcare I gave my notice to the hospital. While continuing to pursue various training and bodywork modalities to build up my tool box I continued the efforts of building a client base, there were many ups and downs along the way however; spring of 2021  the opportunity to open my Place in the heart of Ambler Pennsylvania arose. Being in the Ambler community has been a real blessing, and I look forward to my journey of helping others Feel better, Move better and Live better!
